I also have two: whatever I'm listening to at the moment, and Brahms' German Requiem
The Rite of Spring, by Stravinsky; and Riff-raff, by Giles Swayne.
For me it's either the unaccompanied cello suites by J.S.Bach (must be Tortellier playing), or the Goldberg Variations - again by J.S.Bach (must be Glen Gould playing).
Like Sky, I really wish I knew about the classical music that i like. I can't remember the names or composers of any of the pieces and trying to find out the names is next to impossible ('...it's the one wih the violins at the begining and then the chello bit kicks in, you MUST know it...') I will endevour to find out about these pieces mentioned by you lot.
I have many favourites. I love Faure's "Pavane" and also "Concierto de Aranjuez" by Rodrigo, which can give me goosepimples. Also, Tchaikovsky's "Russian Dance" from the Nutcracker just makes me feel so happy and lively. Not forgetting "The Lark Ascending" by Vaughn-Williams, possibly my favourite piece ever. My dad introduced me to it about a year and half ago, and it is simply the most calming, beautiful music. It sounds cheesy but it evokes an image of england as it was before mankind left its mark.
I'll happily listen to anything by Vaughan Williams, Delius, Butterworth at el, and the French Romantics, but the most wonderful piece of music I possess is Lento by Howard Skempton, a fantastically dreamy and moving composition.
johann brahms german requiem. a truly awesome, piece of classical music
Siegfried's Funeral March is Awesome
In my vast collection, I would have to say Mozart is my favorite. One of the finest pieces ever composed by anyone is the very sublime 'Laudate Dominum' by Mozart. It ranks right up there with Mozart's 'Ave Verum Corpus' and Requiem. You can try a DG recording of Requiem and Laudate Dominum - live at the Salzburg Cathedral - the singing will transport you - guaranteed!
Vaughan Williams - Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis. It's stunning.
Anything baroque. mostly beethovens 9th, or especially his 7th second movement
Most of my favourites have been mentioned, i.e. clair de lune, Barber's adagio, Pavane pour une infante, but I have to include 'au vous dirai je maman' Mozart, prelude from Suite Bergamasque, Bach's 'Jesu, Man's Desire', oh and come on- var 18 from Rapsodie on a theme of Paganini (groundhog day theme)
mozarts violin concerto and elgars cello concerto and rach 3
