Well I can only answer for myself (and I wouldn't class myself as part of the 'cool NME crowd'), but I find his voice unintentionally hilarious - especially in the 'Goodbye My Lover' song. How can anyone take his supposed emotional outporings seriously when he utters them in a way that makes him sound like he's being strangled? I'm absolutely at a loss to explain how he's become so popular, and I genuinely believe that anyone who likes his music has no real understanding of what constitutes good music.

Obviously I'll get accused of all sorts of musical snobbery now...

And on that song it's like he can't fit all the words in so he says them faster "Did I disappoint You"...I really he hate him me...Can't stand his cat like screechy voice

i don't think his voice is that bad. Some of his songs are nice. I fell alpeep listening to james blunt lol :D
Because they jelous coz he sold the most records last year :-)

I'm not jealous in the slightest. By that definition I'd hate the Arctic Monkeys now, but I think they're brill. I'm also a massive Bruce Springsteen fan, and he's shifted more records than James Blunt could ever hope to sell.

NME has always seen itself as cutting edge, and is devoted to finding new, vibrant and exciting talent.

James Blunt's appeal is massive, but he is ploughing a well-trodden path - the angst-ridden sensitive minstral - and that style is utterly at odds with the visceral rock 'n' roll style that the NME scribes, and most of their readers, enjoy, so they make their displeasure known, as they always have, and probably always will.

Didnt say you were jelous hadnt even read your reply. Was answering question :-) And I said he sold more records lasy year not in his lifetime :-) Thats just my opinion to the question not to your comment :-)
His vocals are over mannered and hamstring any attempt to make his emotion sound genuine. He's very middle of the road in the same vein as Melua, Dido, Tunstall, and Jack Johnson. Certainly far too much so for NME readers, whom as Andy says consider themselves to be on the cutting edge. As an NME reader myself, I consider him bland and uninspiring, yet feel a tinge of proudness as a Brit that he got to No. 1 in the US charts.
I hate his stuff and don't read the NME.
Because he is incredibly 'uncool'. Simple as that really.

I find it difficult to think of anyone more uncool- Prince Charles perhaps.
Its because the combination of his vocals and lyrics make you want to throw up. Anyone heard of cocney rhyming slang?
er...cause he's one of the most god awful talentless whingers ive ever had the misfortune to have listened to. I would have thought this was bleedin obvious....
Cos everyone follows everyone else so if james blunt int fashionable this week then no one will like him, next week he'll be cool and fashionable then everyone will like him.Its a fashion thing, such is the fickle world of music.

What people often fail to notice about the song 'You're Beautiful' is the last line of the 1st verse (cause I've got a plan) which suggests he has a plan to win over the girl on the subway. However the 4th and 5th lines of the chorus are 'and I don't know what to do 'cause I'll never be with you.' This completely contradicts what we are led to believe the song is about leaving us in the dark in regards to what his plan ever was.

This sheer lack of common sense coupled with an irritating and frankly boring voice has clearly not gone down well with intelligent, alternative music lovers of today...understandably. His sound has none of the uniqueness that NME readers love. It lacks genuine feeling and you can't help but feel a little queasy when seeing him perform - it all seems a little overdone. His success is undeniable - he is popular with massive audiences. However these audiences, speaking broadly tend not to have the burning passion in music of an average NME reader. This is not to imply they love music any less, it simply suggests they tend to follow a more commercial route, favouring popular, readily available sounds ie. the charts. This is fair enough; each is entitled to their own opinion. My argument, however is that NME readers' broad knowledge of new music today gives them the advantage. They will listen to music in an objective way rather than just hearing a pretty melody with nice lyrics. The 'stripping down' of this song reveals nothing that hasn't already been done and also links back to my point that the song makes no sense.

I am an avid reader of NME and I have sat back and listened to his songs to see what all the fuss was about; to hear what he had to say. Hearing those lyrics being sung in that voice simply confirmed what I and half the nation knew all along. James Blunt is a knob.

I'm not disagreeing - James Blunt clearly is a knob. I can't stand his whinging, whiney voice.

However, just in answer to what you were saying about his "plan", if the video is anything to go by, I think his plan is to kill himself by jumping off an oil rig. He's got it all planned down to the last detail. So that's his plan, AND he's also never gonna be with her.

Mind, I'm not even going to get into how sensible (or not) this is. I mean, this is a girl he's fleetingly seen and probably doesn't even know he exists. Whaddddever.

I think its unfair to say everyone follows everyone else - I don't give a monkey's whether other people dislike him. As everyone seems to be validly pointing out, his music is dull and thats why many people can't stand him.

the real point is -everyone likes something different - hadn't head blunt before going to wireless festival last year where i thought he was great and qwent straight out and bought the album without getting any views from anyone else.

think blunt, along with people such as keane etc simply write very well crafted songs that link music and lyrics well.

ps - also loving the arctic monkeys

That's obvious .It's GIRLIE music!
There's only one thing thats more repulsive, up it's own backside and annoyingly self obsessed than James Blunt and that is the NME.

because they can
