I thought Ewan McGregor's version of Your Song(feat. Alessandro Safina) just shaded it over Elton's version.

I also think Frankie Goes To Hollywood's version of Born To Run was far better than Springsteen. Probably just committed sacrilege with those two choices!

atomic kitten ruined one of my fav songs Eternal Flame. westlife are the worst culprits imo. do none of these acts have any originality or talent?

i agree sithlord.i love sid vicious' version of my way.i dont think covers are a bad idea.i hate it when pop bands try to cover songs.first off they make a balls of the songs and second.they try and give their careers a boost with the help of someone elses work.i like bands who just throw a cover on an album as a bonus track just cause they like the song and not for any gain.i dont like the idea that westlife have got so far when most of their songs werent even theirs

Kick3mOn i liked the futureheads verions of hounds of love.it was a patch on kate bushes version but i thought it was an interesting version

I can't stand covers which don't re-interpret the originals. That's why Gary Jules' and The Futureheads' tracks were so good - they were nothing like the original.

My favourite is Marilyn Manson's version of Tainted Love. Good old wonky-eyed Marilyn.

I agree that a cover should enhance/interpret/destroy the original, otherwise there's very little point and smacks of record company pressure. There's a cover of Sheryl Crow's 'All I Wanna Do' knocking about, I think by Amy Studt, and I honestly can't tell which version it is when it's on the radio. So what's the point? Just rerelease the original.

A mentioned already, Fear Factory's beefing up of 'Cars' worked, as does the Futureheads 'Hounds of Love'. Two more that move me every time are the opposite: they mellow down the originals and make them more powerful, more haunting, namely Johnny Cash 'Hurt' and Jeff Buckley 'Hallelujah'.

Generally I dislike cover versions, although I agree with sp1814 that they can be good if they are sufficiently different to the original. Otherwise, what's the point?

There are some crackers if you know where to look - Amsterdam's rocking version of Cher's Gyspies Tramps And Thieves, The Broken Family Band's blistering country-rock rendition of Leonard Cohen's Diamonds In The Mine, and The Gourds' redneck, hillbilly version of Snoop Doggy Dogg's Gin And Juice (much loved by Mr Dogg himself apparently, with all swearing and hip-hop culture references left intact, but from a different planet musically).

I never used to like covers as i thought they were unoriginal then realised bands are just making the song there style which is a great idea! Some of my favourites are

Tom Tom Club - under the board walk

The Futureheads - Hounds of love

Jeff Buckley- Hallelujah

But then theres covers by Westlife and Atomic Kitten that make me want to cry and not in a good way!
