When you read through the words, it explains what he is singing about:

I sit and wait
does an angel contemplate my fate
and do they know
the places where we go
when were grey and old
cos Ive been told
that salvation lets their wings unfold
so when Im lying in my bed
thoughts running through my head
and I feel that love is dead
Im loving angels instead

and through it all she offers me protection
a lot of love and affection
whether Im right or wrong
and down the waterfall
wherever it may take me
I know that life wont break me
when I come to call she wont forsake me
Im loving angels instead

when Im feeling weak
and my pain walks down a one way street
I look above
and I know ill always be blessed with love
and as the feeling grows
she breathes flesh to my bones
and when love is dead
Im loving angels instead

and through it all she offers me protection
a lot of love and affection
whether Im right or wrong
and down the waterfall
wherever it may take me
I know that life wont break me
when I come to call she wont forsake me
Im loving angels instead

Question Author

I don't think they do.

If this "she" offers him protection, (a lotta love and affection, etc) why is he "loving angels instead"?

I think "she" refers to his angel.
Question Author
it's 'angels', though, plural, and he's loving them 'instead'.

Same as jedi says, but in plural then james!

P'raps he just loves & trusts all Angels.

Question Author

Perhaps it's a poorly-written lyric.

Nice tune, though.

I thought it was about his mother.
whoops, sent that too soon. I thought the song was about his mother, and the fact that she is the one who "offers him protection, whether I'm right or wrong". I also once heard a story about a statue of angels near Robbie's childhood home, so the angels represent a place of safety and security. But then again, they may have just chosen some nice words that fitted the tune
since when did any song lyics make sense, or make a story?. Songs dont have to be about something for pople to like them, i think, most lyrics are a crock

i thought it was about his mum, he wrote the words after hearing the music, didnt he steel the idea from a bloke in ireland?

i feel guilty for slaggin robbie off...i think he's ace!

The generql opinion is that the song is about Robie's mum, to whom he is very close, and who looked after him during the worst of his drug addicition, although some people believe it is about his grandmother.

The referencce kags makes is to the figure of an angel which graces the top of Burslem town hall - Robbie's birthplace, and supposdely inspiration for the song, but that's more likely just a bit of tourism guff from the local council.

tosh, he stole it off a bloke in Ireland-well, I think he did actually pay him for the song but nothing like the amount the guy would have been entitled to given success of the song. The guy wrote it about his mum who I think had died of cancer. That's what I believe anyway-we may never know the truth!
