Back in late 70's there was a song which opened with the line "I met her in a pool hall..." and the verse was "goodbye girl, goodbye girl", or something like that. Any ideas?

Not surprisingly, it's called Goodbye Girl, by the mighty Squeeze:

I met her in a poolroom
Her name I didnt catch
She looked like something special
The kind whod understand
The room was almost spinning
She pulled another smile
She had the grace like pleasure
She had a certain style

Sunlight on the lino
Woke me with a shake
I looked around to find her but shed gone
Goodbye girl
Goodbye girl
Goodbye girl

She took me to her motel
The room on the second floor
A kettle and two coffees
Her number on the door
She said I hardly know you
Agreed we kissed goodnight
I knew that in the morning
Somehow Id wake to find

Sunlight on the lino
Woke me with a shake
I looked around to find her but shed gone
Goodbye girl
Goodbye girl
Goodbye girl

I lost my silver bracelet
My clubroom locker keys
The money in the billfold
It doesnt bother me
My wife has moved to boston
So luck is not the word
If you ever see her
Say hello goodbye girl

Sunlight on the lino
Woke me with a shake
I looked around to find her but shed gone
Goodbye girl
Goodbye girl
Goodbye girl
Goodbye girl
Goodbye girl
Goodbye girl
Goodbye girl

I'm impressed....thanks
littleoldme - where'd you get the lyrics from? They seem to have been 'americanised' (or should that be 'americanized' ?). Billfold - wallet, Boston - Jersey...
Whoops, hadn't noticed that!! I just copied and pasted them from here:

As you can see, they do credit the song to Squeeze, so it's not some American cover version.

Just interested to know whether Squeeze had released a version for the US. They were a band who did draw on their London roots - e.g., Up The Junction. I would have thought they could have got away with Jersey, though...

I lost my silver razor
My clubroom locker keys
The money in the waistcoat
It doesn't bother me
My wife has moved to Guernsey
So mug is not the word
If you ever see her
Say hello Goodbye Girl
Goodbye Girl
Goodbye Girl
Goodbye Girl

got these lyrics off of lyricdownload.com , so I'd assume that they were changed for the US market

Guernsey now? So all we really know is that Mrs Tilbrook is somewhere in the Channel Islands. :-)

well Glen Tilbrook always did have a way with words. I suppose Guernsey is a bit more exotic than Clapham Junction !
