Burning music files using WMP

I want to burn tracks from my music library onto a CDR using windows media player. I am able to burn each track to the cd and play the cd in my pc, but i am not able to play the cd in any other portable or domestic cd player.
Can anyone tell me what i am doing wrong? I really thought this should be a simple procedure.
I think i need to convert from MP3 to WMA or WAV format and hopefully this will enable my cd player to play the tracks.
Can anyone suggest a file converter that i can download online for free. One that is user friendly

Go to the help section in Media Player - type in Burn CDs and check through the instructions to make sure you are not missing anything out.

Media player should do everything automatically.

your cd player should be able to play tracks that are in mp3 format, however, some older cd players wont play any cd's that are burnt, perhaps that is the problem? personally, i wouldnt use windows media player to burn cd's i'd use a programme such as nero which is specifically for burning cd's and will copy your music files in the correct format.

CDs contain data files in CDA (Compact Disc Audio) format. These are equivalent to WAV files on a PC, in that they are not compressed like mp3, WMA and various others around.

In order to play CDRs on standard CD players, you need to burn the WAV files to the CD (the simplest way of doing this is to select 'make audio CD' in whichever program you are using - This will usually allow you to select mp3/WMA files and convert them to WAV for you before burning)

That said, however, it then depends on your CD player whether it will read them or not. Like Catherine says, not all CD players will read home-made CDs, whilst some will read your mp3/WMA CDs that are burnt as data files rather than audio
