But I suppose really its 'An Ending (Ascent) by Brian Eno. It is what heaven would probably sound like - it manages to be both major and minor at the same time. It's perfect.
The ultimate *statement* about music would be John Cage's '4.33'.

abelmanmoth, is that Eno one the one that's often used in adverts and TV shows? That sounds like it's entirely made up of ghostly chord changes? It makes me tingly, if it's the one I'm thinking of.
One song - that's tough. It'd be a toss-up between: Beatles, Penny Lane. I've always leant more towards the Macca songs and this one sums up the art of catchy pop-song writing - perfect length, perfect tune, every little change up or down is spot-on - it pushes all the right buttons.
Or - Radiohead, Planet Telex. It's got everything I want in a rock song - great textures, every kind of guitar sound, wonderful dynamics, an economical but odd/baffling lyric, oh man it's just wonderful.
Neenee you sneakily haven't stated yours, despite asking the question.

What a great question! Bound to get everyone talking.
Mine would have to be, at the moment, Hotel California by the Eagles. Iris by Goo Goo Dolls is also brilliant though (Not entirely sure why, it's quite simple. It just gets to you I guess!) Hotel California, because it reminds me of someone ;-) AND it's fun to play at full volume out of my window in the heatwave!
Although, this time last year I would have said Find the River by REM, the lyrics are just so beautiful and it just said everything I felt at the time.
