Whats the best ballad you've ever heard. I have some space on a cd I'm doing and would like to know if someone suggests a song I don't have.

I've always been a bit of a fan of Fleetwood Mac, but I only recently found out that the witch that is Stevie de la Nicks wrote an awful lot of their material. Better still, I (astoundingly) only recently heard her song, 'Sara' - do you know it? If you don't, get it on the playlist! It's just quite beautiful, ethereal and, well, you get the idea. I'd love to know what anyone thinks of this. I think it's one of the loveliest ballads I've ever heard, and I know quite a few too!

Other than that, you could try (if you don't already have) any of the following -

Live To Tell - Madonna (very underrated, one of her better efforts)
Angie - Stones
My Foolish Heart - Al Jarreau
I Wanna Be Adored - Stone Roses
Hearts And Bones - Paul Simon
My Cherie Amour - Renee Flemming (covering SW)

I'd agree with the Sarah McLachlan too, quite a few of hers are stunning. Good luck.
'Call and answer' by The Barenaked Ladies. Find it on the album 'stunt' or the EDTV soundtrack.
Crazy For You - Madonna (another underrated one)
Saving All My Love For You - Whitney Houston

What about journey with "don't stop believing" they use it in the film monster and it is one major ballad!
Prefab Sprout - When Love Breaks Down
Black Label Society - Spoke In The Wheel
Breed 77 - The River
Nilson- Without you

Crowded House- Don't dream its over

Eva Cassidy- Songbird

Josh Groban-?Questa Notte?

it can really depend on the mood you are in when asked...but all the above
Hi, The Beatles did some lovely ballads, ahem showing my age now!..... here is some of my favorites.

The Beatles..... Yesturday

The Beatles..... Eleanor Rigby

The Beatles..... The Long And Winding Road.

Bruce Hornsby..... Mandolin Rain

Bruce Hornsby..... The Way It Is

Sinead O'Connor..... Nothing Compares 2 U

The Beach Boys...... God Only Knows

George Michael..... A Different Corner

Eric Carmen.... All By Myself

Dr Hook...... A Little Bit More

Art Garfunkel.... I Only Have Eyes For You

Sting.... Fields Of Gold

Bread..... Baby I'm A Want You

Hope these help you. X X X :-)

Coldplay- Yellow
Daniel Bedingfield- If you're not the one(I think!!)
Radiohead- High and dry
Damien Rice - Cheers Darlin'
The Cruel Sea - Save Me
Counting Crows - A Long December
Billy Joel - Goodnight Saigon
Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe

I'm probably waaaay of target with these, but it's what springs to mind. I'd probably put Groove Armada - At The River in there as well, but I don't think ballad is the right word for it.
Diana Ross 'Aint no mountain high enough'
I watched Alice Cooper perform a beautiful song once on a chat show, stood over a bed with roses on it that then got set alight - something along the lines of 'Burning Beds'??
This is a great thread - I'm checking out loads of songs that either I have forgotten or never heard of...
I wanted to add in my own, cos I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned Scorpions yet. Loads of good ones, but my own favourites are
Wind of Change
Fly people Fly
In Trance
Excuse me, but isn't a ballad supposed to tell a narrative ?, ie its a story in song.
Not just 'I love you baby, why did you leave me' repeated over and over again!
Something like Dylans Hurricane or Lily, Rosemary & Jack of Hearts, The Drifters Escape, or Shane Macgowan Pair of Brown Eyes or does it have to have a chorus repeated at the end of the verse eg Dubliners etc ??
Its so difficult to choose. Ermm. Coldplay always come up with ace ballads. Fix You always makes me cry.

Ermmmmmm, Elton John I want love. I know people take the mick out of Elton but I think he's good ; Green Day Wake me up when september ends ; Most things by James Blunt (another people make fun of but I like him) ; Kt Tunstall Another Place to Fall and other stuff she did. Not sure whether their ballads but I'll put em in anyway ; Stuff by Keane ; Scissor Sistors Mary another semi-ballad that I like ; U2 sometimes you can't make it on your own

Theres some out of my collection, I actually dont know the difinition of a ballad exactly but these I think are like them in my world. Hope these help.
The only heavy metal ballad with any integrity I would say is 'Nothing Else Matters' by Metallica
Eric Clapton: Wonderful tonight
2 OUT OF 3 AINT BAD, Meatloaf, lyrics mean a whole lot to me
Sorry to rubbish most of the previous answers but I looked up a definition of ballad:

A ballad is a story in a song, usually a narrative song or poem. Any form of story may be told as a ballad, ranging from accounts of historical events to fairy tales in verse form. It is usually with foreshortened alternating four- and three-stress lines ('ballad meter') and simple repeating rhymes, and often with a refrain.

If it is based on political or religious themes, a ballad may then be a version of a hymn. Ballads should not be confused with the ballade, a 14th and 15th century French verse form.

Most of the answers are not ballads, but pop songs!

depeche mode - somebody

queen - too much love will kill you

shania twain - when you kiss me

evanescence - my immortal

pet shop boys & kylie - in denial

try some of those!!!
