Ballad
Whats the best ballad you've ever heard. I have some space on a cd I'm doing and would like to know if someone suggests a song I don't have.

Better still, I (astoundingly) only recently heard her song, 'Sara' - do you know it? If you don't, get it on the playlist! It's just quite beautiful, ethereal and, well, you get the idea. I'd love to know what anyone thinks of this. I think it's one of the loveliest ballads I've ever heard, and I know quite a few too!
Other than that, you could try (if you don't already have) any of the following -
Live To Tell - Madonna (very underrated, one of her better efforts)
Angie - Stones
My Foolish Heart - Al Jarreau
I Wanna Be Adored - Stone Roses
Hearts And Bones - Paul Simon
My Cherie Amour - Renee Flemming (covering SW)
I'd agree with the Sarah McLachlan too, quite a few of hers are stunning. Good luck.

Damien Rice - Cheers Darlin'
The Cruel Sea - Save Me
Counting Crows - A Long December
Billy Joel - Goodnight Saigon
Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe
I'm probably waaaay of target with these, but it's what springs to mind. I'd probably put Groove Armada - At The River in there as well, but I don't think ballad is the right word for it.

Excuse me, but isn't a ballad supposed to tell a narrative ?, ie its a story in song.
Not just 'I love you baby, why did you leave me' repeated over and over again!
Something like Dylans Hurricane or Lily, Rosemary & Jack of Hearts, The Drifters Escape, or Shane Macgowan Pair of Brown Eyes or does it have to have a chorus repeated at the end of the verse eg Dubliners etc ??

Its so difficult to choose. Ermm. Coldplay always come up with ace ballads. Fix You always makes me cry.
Ermmmmmm, Elton John I want love. I know people take the mick out of Elton but I think he's good ; Green Day Wake me up when september ends ; Most things by James Blunt (another people make fun of but I like him) ; Kt Tunstall Another Place to Fall and other stuff she did. Not sure whether their ballads but I'll put em in anyway ; Stuff by Keane ; Scissor Sistors Mary another semi-ballad that I like ; U2 sometimes you can't make it on your own
Theres some out of my collection, I actually dont know the difinition of a ballad exactly but these I think are like them in my world. Hope these help.

Sorry to rubbish most of the previous answers but I looked up a definition of ballad:
A ballad is a story in a song, usually a narrative song or poem. Any form of story may be told as a ballad, ranging from accounts of historical events to fairy tales in verse form. It is usually with foreshortened alternating four- and three-stress lines ('ballad meter') and simple repeating rhymes, and often with a refrain.
If it is based on political or religious themes, a ballad may then be a version of a hymn. Ballads should not be confused with the ballade, a 14th and 15th century French verse form.
Most of the answers are not ballads, but pop songs!
