Divine Comedy & Father Ted

The theme music for Father Ted was written by the Divine Comedy, is it just a coincidence that the band name reflects the programme. I have this theory that maybe they changed their name or whatever, because of this commission. Can anyone enlighten me?

To the best of my knowledge, The Divine Comedy pre-dates Father Ted (according to one website, Neil Hannon has been using that pseudonym since 1993) and I always thought it was a reference to Dante myself, but having listened to several of their songs I think it's a reference to that great tragic farce we call life.

I believe Neil Hannon's father is a bishop & this may have something to do with his slightly theological band name. Also I'd say the name (and the fact that the band is Irish) would have appealed to Graham Linehan & Arthur Matthews.

Thanks ppl! You see this is why I love Answerbank, collectively life's problems seem to fade to oblivion. Yeah now you mention the Dante reference, it all seems to click into place. Nice theory though....while it lasted! ;-) ....At least I won't make a fool of myself at parties!
