How do artists keep track of which of their tracks are being played by the media to get payment ? And what is the sort of figure they get per play ?

They don't - the media fill in pre-prepared forms and forward them to the PRS (Performing Rights Society) which calculates the royalties and distributes them accordingly.

I think payment rates vary depending on various Machieavellian schemes of times of day and so on.
As someone who has quite literally today sent off the quarterly PRS return for where I work - I'm pretty certain most of the charges are a complete stab in the dark - easily the most disorganised lot of cowboys I've ever dealt with!
