Bob Dylan originally recorded it and it was Brian Ferry `s first solo (top ten) hit

It's originally a Bob Dylan song, the melody of which is based on, I think, and old folk song called 'Lord Randall'. Bob has sung it with just acoustic guitar accompaniment on his 1963 'Freewheelin' album, and as a full band version on numerous occasions live, the most notable probably being the version on 'Live 75' one of the so-called 'Bootleg Series'.
If it's not Bob Dylan you're after, then Roxy Music released a version of it as a single in the '70's and various other people have recorded cover versions of it. Hope that helps.
