What is the point of tuning a percussion instrument?

I was looking on amazon.com for a bodhran, which is a kind of irish traditional drum. Anyway one model i saw was the "Howard Model Tunable Bodhran, Synthetic Head". How does tuning affect a drum?? I dont get it at all!
