Bob, your public-spirited approach to the copyright law is admirable, but you don't need to worry. If The BPI prosecuted everyone who copies discs, they would have to fine most of the civilised world. Copying for your own use is tehcnically illegal, but accepted. If you are making wholesale copies and selling them on, the BPI would have an issue, but copyig for your own security is seen as acceptbale, although tehcnically illegal. Look at the rise of duplicating software - everyone is using it for their own purposes - like they used blank cassette tapes in the past. It's not the end of civilisation to back up your own music collection, which as you say, you purchased legitimately in the first place. I'd carry on, and not worry about it.
