A 'middle eight' is the eight bars, usually instrumental that are placed in the middle of a standard song format. If the composer writes in a 'verse - chorus - verse chorus' format, there is usually eight bars of melody with no vocal, followed by a final verse and chorus. This is a popular format, and excellent examples of the style can be found on any of The Beatles' early albums.
