3 Chords will get you by on loads of beatles and dylan....the western music theory is based around scales and if you take the I, IV, V chord progression and muck around with that (with the occassional relative monir thrown in) then you will be able to play LOADS of songs. If you can play G C and D (relative minor here being Em) then your flying (these are easy on the guitar). If you want to find out most then visit http://www.olga.net which has loads of songs with chords written out and you can see just how easy some are......the opposite end is something like Frank Zappa or Yes....diminished 13ths with an flattened 7th anyone?
you can play the beatles classic 'paperback writer' using only two simple chords C and G7. I don't know if you know how to read tabs but C (from E to e) is X32010 and G7 is 320001. just get a frind to play the main riff and hey presto! your a beatle! good luck and happy strumming...........dear sir or madam will you read my book it took me years to write will you take a look........
If you can be bothered to learn 3 chords you might as well learn a few more!!! Honestly, it's worth it
