Is 'modern jazz' an oxymoron?
If you like the mellower end of modern jazz, you could try Peter White, Ronnie Jordan or Will Downing. Also bands like Loose Ends may be worth a look.
Good Modern Jazz? - No such thing. However, Kent records do a series called "Mod Jazz" ; this is "modern" (1963-69ish), but is very listenable (!), funky and even dance friendly.Unlike the arthouse beatnik racket that people pretend to like because it displays how "cultured" they are!. Sorry, a bit of a rant. Modern Jazz is hard work - don't do it!
gordon haskell, harrys bar
The word may be an oxymoron but the sounds that I listen to of the tradiotionalists is the best jazz , in my opinion . If you are interested in beautiful, interesting ,meaningful music which stirs  your emotions. listen to the music of those guys who defy categorization.'' If it sounds good it is good" DUKE ELLINGTON
