Who started Knotting Hill Carnival? I heard it was a Trinidadian woman who was kicked out of the US for her communist beliefs. Is this true? Where can I find more information about her?

Further away, in North London, dances were often organised in local churches or city halls and these were very popular. In 1959, the year after the Notting Hill riots, West Indian Gazette editor Claudia Jones (who had just been deported from the USA for her race protests) organised the first carnival.
