The song was written by Ed Cobb and recorded by Gloria Jones. Never a big hit chartwise, the song was a massive hit in Northern Soul circles, being a regular spin at the Wigan Casino in the 1970's. Marc Almond, an occasional visitor to the northern scene recorded his own version of the song with Soft cell, which was a worldwide hit. Gloria Jones enjoyed an unfortunate claim to fame as the girlfriend of Marc Bolan, she was driving the mini involved in the singer's fatal road accident. In spite of singing that he 'drove a Rolls Royce 'cos it's good for my voice', Marc never passed his driving test.

Ed Cobb was the writer. I have it on a CD which says that Ruth Swan recorded the original version. So I am not totally sure about that. I have always thought it was Gloria Jones in the mid 60s.

In all probability, Ruth Swan recorded the original version, but Gloria Jones is credited with recording the definitive version, before Soft Cell took it to the pop masses.
