i am going to buy a 2nd hand piano but i need to know what over strung means.

Don't panic, it doesn't mean over strung (!) it refers to a particulare type of construction, some pianos are overstrung, and some understrung, but it's to do with the way the piano strings are placed on the frame, and neither has any effect on the playing, as far as I know, but I'm not an expert.

Andy is right in that it's to do with the construction of the stringing and damping mechanisms and has little (minor action changes) effect on the playing.....overstrung pianos are better, usually dearer.......If buying from a dealer expect to pay somewhere between �300 - �500 for a good servicable piano (normally german if old..oriental is newer) and up to �1000 for a better action and tone model.....as always in life you gets what you pays for.
