Personally, I listen to the track once through and make a few notes on what I do and don't like then listen to the track again writing a review as it plays.
Always make your criticism constructive. Say something like "The girl's voice in the chorus needed to be louder" rather than "The chorus was rubbish" and be honest. Don't say you like it when you don't just to please the artist.

Just say what you think - pretend you're talking to someone about the CD (you could even record yourself chatting about it and write it down as you play it back). REviews are informal and chatty and more descriptive than news stories (and sometimes even funny). For inspiration have a look on newspaper websites for reviews that have been done before to make sure you get the style right for the publication you are writing for. And remember - it doesn't have to be Oxford high-brow English for a review - just something that will give the reader a taste of what the song/album is like. Mentioning the artist's background/previous releases is also a good start - you can say what they have done and how they've moved on and developed etc. Hope this helps. (I'm ents editor on a daily paper - so hopefully I know what I'm talking about!)
