Hi I have just found yiour answer.
Can you tell me more ?
I went out with him as an 18 year old.
Sad to hear of Johnny's death. I was a plugger at Pye in 1962 and helped got Joe Brown's record to No 1. Then later wrote several songs with Johnny Bev in 1969/70. He was a pleasant and talented guy - sadly missed... from Paul
Johnny married my mum at he start of the sixties. They had three children, I was born in 1962, my sister a year later, and another sister six years later. He remarried in the seventies and went to live in Arizona where he continued to work as a singer. A son born in the USA died as the result of a car accident. He had a few singles out on PYE after leaving Joe Brown, and further efforts on Columbia and CBS which didn't come to anything. He didn't look after himself very well - drinking, smoking etc - and had several heart attacks. He died barely over forty years old. He was forever unsatisfied and married again just before he died. His early records aren't all that bad for the time, but they are nowhere near as good as he would have liked. Johnny's first wife, Jan, started the first Cliff Richard fan club after my dad took her to see Cliff and the Drifters at the Two Is coffee bar in Soho. Simpler and happier times.

Just found your answers .Thank you for the info.
I met him in Cumbria where he was playing working mens clubs around 1966. I was 18 he was about ten years older. Looking at your answer he was maybe married at the time, he said he was single, I was young and impressionable.
He was a heavy drinker and smoker.
He met my family and he loved chatting to my mother.
I moved a way to work, and he came to see me, but by then I had another life and we didnt see each other again.
He was the singer with my group briefly in the 60s. We did various gigs and were briefly the resident band in a night club in S. London. A great singer and very talented but very unreliable. Through him met his wife (Jan) and Cliff and Big Jim Sullivan. Last time I saw him he was broke and borrowed £5 off me in return for a cheque....which bounced. Never saw him again. Despite our differences I really liked him and he was probably the best singer I ever worked with.

Thank you, I have just seen this, Jim the muso.
Yes he was un reliable as you say, but a likeable chap mostly.
You're welcome cab. Out of interest I have (somewhere) some original demo tapes of Johnny backed by Big Jim Sullivanan amongst others. They were (if I remember correctly) mastered by Tony Hatch and were original songs by Johnny. They never got commercially recorded though. Although he was only briefly the singer with my group I knew him for a few years and we did lots of demo recordings for Cliff in Regent Sound Studios in London.

Thank you for the update, he will always have a place in my heart x
You do realise he was married? Do you not worry about what you've written? He also had three children at the time who now surf the internet. Always have a place in my heart, a bit much I think.
