I think it's about God, and he is questioning whether god really exists. The first verse is about whether the world was created or a product of evolution - fish coming out of oceans, growing legs and walking; monkeys coming down from trees and becoming humans (growing tall and starting talking).. He then talks about looking up at the night sky and seeing stars (a thousand eyes staring back) but he's wondering if the only thing around them is blackness (i.e. no god). And he also says "If you're not really here then the stars don't even matter, and I'm filled to the top with fear that it's all just a bunch of matter... " He's afraid that god doesn't exist and that it's all meaningless. He also questions whether the fact that he can't see god means he isn't there "if vision is the only validation then most of my life isn't real." I am not sure why he calls god Black and Gold - guess you'll have to ask him that one! Listen to the song again and let me know what you think.... Cheers!
