Unfortunately I can't remember lyrics, but it played on the radio around those years. It was steady paced with a high male voice sometimes in falsetto singing something about flying or falling. It was kind of heavenly. I think there was a soaring guitar solo as well. I've checked out every list of songs for those years without luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

could it be `falling` by mcalmont and butler?
Could it be Glorious by Andreas Johnson?
Could it be any more vague?
Could it be "Falling" by Julee Cruise? It was the theme music to Twin Peaks, and was a bit like you describe. Click on the link on this page to hear a sample http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000002LH4/qid =1094681934/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-1970054-0854435?v=glance&s =music
Although I should point out that this dates from about 10 years earlier!
David Gray and Daniel Beddingfield have both done songs that way... You could also try Coldplay or Travis or Muse, seeing as their lead singers also have that sort of range. Was it a popular song? Did the man have an accent? Any other hints on the song type?
She's so Hiiiiiiiigh, High above me, she's so lovely? If so, it's "She's so High"

Thanks for all the suggestions and sorry for not being more specific. One reply that seems to have been deleted mentioned Coldplay and I've got a feeling the song might be "We Never Change" from Parachutes. The guitar riff is exactly the same as I remember, but the melody isn't. Could be my memory playing tricks or a different arrangement, or a similar song. Anyway thanks!
