If Only I Could Find The Title Of This Instrumental....
This was an instrumental hit in Europe and a minor one in the UK in, (I think), 1971 - 1973 (Yes, I know, hardly a small time frame). I'm pretty certain it wasn't English - not 'The Clog Dance' or anything more obvious, but it was led by a simply fantastic violin that seemed to slur its way through a haunting melody. I now have every piece of music I've ever wanted...except for this track and have been so frustrated in not finding it. Please, somebody, make my life complete and try and help me with a title. If it's any help, I was on a French exchange when it was released and so it would be, I think, a late spring/early summer composition. All suggestions most gratefully received. Jon

Bit of a long shot here. It may be the theme to "The summer of 42". Here is a version but probably not the one you are after.

Thank you everybody who has made an effort to help me with this vexing problem. sadly, it's not any of the answers posted so far, but it's good to know that people are prepared to help!
It was definitely a 'pop' song - on the radio and on vinyl. It was up-beat, the violin was playing a similar refrain to Jean Michael Jarre's later, 'Oxygene' It could have been Stefan Grappelli or someone like that - but I have checked out his discography and it's a no-no.

Thanks for the suggestion Gucciman - I have tried looking for sites that would have for weeks/months of particular years, but with little success. It's one of those crazy things that as soon as I see the title, I'll know immediately. I'm pretty certain it wasn't top 10 material, but I'm equally certain it made it into the top 30.
Cant think of the tune you are referring to but try researching Jean-Luc Ponty, a French violinis from that era. He used to (and probably still does!) play an electric violin. As well as jazz, which i believe was his main genre, he supported many famous pop mucisicians and may have recorded pop in his own right. The track you are looking for he may have been sitting in with someone else. Try his record company for info.
Was it this?
It's called Jig-a-jig and was by East of Eden. It was first released in April 1971

I can't believe the number of people who have been so generous in their suggestions - thank you ever so much -this really is a marvellous forum.
Once I find the track, I will post it so you can all hear what the kafuffle was all about!
No hits so far, although I think Johnny37's is possibly a good route to follow and so I'll spend some time sifting away... Once again, thank you everybody for taking the time
