The ipod comes with an inbuilt hard drive - the same way as you get a hard drive on your PC. This means that you can store files - movies, documents, presentation etc etc and share them and carry them around... although the software that is inbuilt on the ipod will only play the audio files.
An ipod is an mp3 player. How many tracks it holds depends on what capacity you buy. Mine is an ipod mini which is 4gb so about 1000 tracks, my bf's is 15gb so about 4000, the biggest you can buy is 40gb which is a massive 10,000 tracks. You can also use it to store other types of files like documents although I've never tried using mine that way. Many mp3 players only seem to hold about 100-200 tracks so it is pretty superior to those.
