The sentimental 1950s hit was recorded by the short-lived pop trio The Teddy Bears, and written by their guitarist / songwriter as a tribute to his father, who had committed suicide. Although the group failed to find lasting fame and fortune, their teenage composer and musician did rather better - his name was Phil Spector.
