If we're all going to miss him this much...how must they be feeling. That instantly recognisable voice.....hard to believe it's gone, and such a funny man, not just on the radio, I loved his contributions on Grumpy Old Men.

It's so sad, my boyfriend rang me to tell me this afternoon and I've been in a bit of a daze ever since. I used to listen to Home Truths (not as often as I wish I had) and it always felt like a private, cosy chat with him - I'll miss him very much and I'm sure that there can't be many people who've switched on a radio in the last 40 years who won't mourn the passing of this 'Godlike Genius' of a man.

John Peel was instrumental in defining my musical tastes. I used to listen to him on my radio under the bed covers at school and his infectious enthusiasm, dry humour and willingness to play anything that had a smattering of musical credibility encouraged me to look past the mediocrity of the charts in the 80s.
