Reading orchestral sheet music - PLEEEASE help!

Okay, so if a beat has the letter "p" written under it, what does that mean? For a percussion instrument.

I know that 'f' means hit harder, so was wondering if maybe 'p' meant hit faintly?

"p" means "softly", as in the Italian word piano or pianissimo.

Even if you're a percussionist, 'f' does not mean 'hit harder'. It simply means 'play loudly'. If you're playing with a band, that could be a very different 'loudly' to the one you have in mind, depending on what they're doing.
