I been listening to some Depeche Mode songs lately and I was wondering what albums to buy as they have so bloody many. I was going to get their singles albums 81-84 and 84-98 but now they have released a 6 volume boxset, arrrrrhhhhhhh, help.

AFAIK the 6-CD box sets are just repackages of the original singles, so what you have covers most of the original releases. The sets will contain various remixes and B-sides and are probably only of interest to hardcore DM fans.

I was a bit disappointed by their most recent "proper" album, but still listen to all the rest from time to time. I'd suggest that you go for the albums containing the singles you like most to start with.

I am tempted by the "remixes" CD though...

Depeche Mode's career splits pretty evenly into two sections - the first when they were an 80's synth pop band writing hits with hooks you could hang a wet duffle coat on, and the latter section where they mutated into an drug-fueled electronic goth rock monster with a world tour that literally nearly killed them. The first section is neatly summed up with their excellent '81'84' singles collection, and you can explore further if you like their career direction swerve.
I've just spotted their Remixes 81' - 04' (3CD) for 11.99 including postage on cdwow. That's good - innit?
