Anytime there is ever mention of Eminem being the first white rapper to have credibility there is always the jokey little, "ha ha, sure before Eminem there was only Vanilla Ice". Why does no one ever mention Everlast and House of Pain, they were really good, but they are never mentioned in these discussions. Does anyone know why?

I must admit I am not really a fan of rap. I consider much of those rhymes for the playground rather than mainstream music, and much of it wouldn't get anywhere if it didn't steal famous hooks from generally better songs. From the Sugarhill Gangs theft of Good Times by Chic to the House Of Pains theft of the intro bars to Harlem Shuffle, they've all nicked bits.

However before my little rant I had intended to add the name Snow - Informer to the unmentioned list.

I am a huge Hip-Hop fan and have been since 78 when i first heard this brilliant new musical genre.
I agree that there hasnt been a lot of good quality white rappers over the years but the Beasties surely were the first to do it sucessfully to my knowledge. I think Eminem is a very clever rapper and his lyrics need to be listened to properly. All to often i hear people slating rap as rubbish etc but they often only appear to know about the commercial side of it eg the stuff that charts and in my opinion a lot of that isnt that good and there is much better stuff about.
As for John Lennon who really cares what he might think and to be honest i reckon as a lover of music he would probably like some of it.
Sampling and stealing are not the same things either, if you licence a sample thats not theft if you lift a sample without getting permission that is theft like De La Soul did with a Turtles sample and Marrs did with Pump up the volume and countless others have along the way. It can cost a lot of money to get the use of a sample and a lot of Hip-Hop acts didnt have any money and werent signed in the early days so they just took their chances and it was often only when the songs got popular that the lawyers turned up !
I actually think that it is very creative to find these brilliant hooks and beats and then incorporate them into a new tune. I doubt many of us would have ever heard of a lot of the tunes that have been sampled in their original format i know i certainly wouldnt have. I had never heard of Bob James or the Incredible Bongo Band before Hip-Hop got its hands on their music, the list of clever imaginitive samples is endless! To be honest loads of bands copy or sample each other and that is accepted, double standards me thinks. Didnt the Verve use a Rolling Stones sample without permission?! Havent their been many a court case over guitar riffs etc!? I think to dismiss possibly the largest musical genre on the planet is foolish !

Don't laugh but if you listen to it, it is not actually that different in vocal structure to rap.



My earlier comments about theft of hook lines wasn't menat literally. My point was probably not well made, but I sincerely believe that many songs would not get anywhere if they didn't have the famous hook to bolster an otherwise lacklustre product. Hip hop and rap seem to do it more often generally than other genres.
