Clapton / Winwood concert

Not a question, just an opinion. Did anyone else see it on BBC4 last night? Mesmerising, utterly brilliant show. I had no idea Steve Winwood was such a talented musician. And Clapton is just sheer genius.

I am surprised anyone is surpised at that !!!!

He was playing concerts backing blues singers when he was in his mid teens.

He was only 15 when he joined the Spencer Davis Group in the early 60s (Keep on Running etc).

He then formed Traffic, and was of course with Claptop in Blind Faith for a short period.

He has also had many solo albums.

I remember seeing Blind Faith in a Hyde Park free concert in 1969.

I also remember seeing Claption as "Derek and the Dominos" at a concert in London.

1970 I seem to remember.

It was the same night England got knocked out of the World Cup 3-2 by West Germany after being 2-0 up.

I remember being torn between staying at home and watching the football or going out to see Clapton.

Clapton played very low key and was fed up with long guiter solos so was a little dissappointing, and England lost as well, so all in all not a great night.

God that makes me feel old (I am a little younger than Stevie Winwood !!)

Stevie Winwood also appeared on the Jimi Hendrix album Electric Ladyland.

I believe there was talk at the time of Hendrix and Winwood forming a group together.

You have to be pretty good to join a group with Hendrix in it !!

Winwood was someone who, when I first listened to him in the 80's, never really turned me on. I was about 19, and he brought out the album 'Back in the High Life'. It was the first I knew of him, and I quite liked the 'Higher Love' track which was in the charts (that's why I bought the album). However, I thought the rest of the album was drivel, so after about a dozen listens, it was retired to the back of the cupboard and never played again. Over the years however I started to find out that he had a history long before that album, but still never really made any effort to find out what he was like. Last night's concert now makes me realise I may have been missing out on something.

Clapton, has also in some way not been at the top of my list. But over recent years I have seen a few documentaries on him and his music, and now realise the guy is some kind of guitar god.

Don't you love that though? Having an epiphany about someone or something you always thought was nothing special?

My great grampa threw Steve Winwood out of his house for having long hair - many many years ago. He was a friend of my second cousin or something

The clapton / winwood concert is on again twice this weekend on BBC4 on TV.

Saturday at about 2am in the morning, and sometime Sunday evening I seem to remember.
