Thanks snags, that was terrifying, I'll probably have another bad dream tonight. Last night's dream, I was eating Bluebottles, but they were just getting stuck to my back teeth and I was having to scrape their chewed up bodies off.

Anyway, guess I've established the Sandman comes at night to pluck the eyes out of children who don't go to sleep, is that correct? It's a worthy story to tell children to get them to go to bed, mind you, they will probably need therapy in adult life.
Velvetee... here's the more traditional answer :-)

The Sandman is a character in many children's stories, invoked to help (or lull) children to sleep. He is said to sprinkle sand or dust on or into the eyes of the child at night to bring on dreams and sleep. The grit or 'sleep' (rheum) in one's eyes upon waking is supposed to be the result of the Sandman's work the previous evening.
Never thought too much about the meaning of The Chordettes' song - which the advert uses. It was recorded in 1958 - a far more innocent time, so it is unlikely to be anything as scary as this film short, which was a wonderful piece of work.
