I'm going to leave this here in case anyone got to see the Mariinsky production of the Ring Cycle, which has just finished at Covent Garden.
It hasn't been well reviewed.
Valery Gergiev cast multiple soloists in the lead roles, so that they could squash the performance into 4 nights. The singers only appear to have highlighted each other's weaknesses.
The orchestral tempo, possibly slow and beautiful, actually seems to have been ponderous.
The orchestra were apparently beginning to tire after 4 consecutive nights.
The staging itself has been described as "worsening as it progressed".
Now, I didn't go ... but I really want to find anyone who did. Tickets for all 4 nights wopuld have cost, I'm guessing ... 600-800?
So you'd be miffed if it was a disappointing production.
