I've heard a lot of Specials' songs from their first album on TV recently, usually in some sort of makeover show or another. Is there a reason for this?...have they come out of copyright or something, or is it just that there's an 80's rude boy working for the production company and is choosing music he likes.

Maybe it's something to do with the 80s nostalgia thing going on at the moment.  On the other hand, it coule be that their audience demographic grew up in the 80s...
A lot of old bands (Specials/Selecter/Bad Manners etc) have recently had albums (re)released from their early days.  Maybe it was to cash in on the 80's revival and a lot of people have since remembered or discovered what a fantastic band they were and are therefore using their music on TV.

A mate of mine used to work in the BBC recors library, and part of the job was suggesting tracks for certain programmes.

He used to try to get his faves in as much as he could, and was particularly proud of getting Iron Maiden on Match of the Day once!
