Who do you consider to be the first group as we know them.
Eg. Bill Haley and the Comets, Buddy Holly and The Crickets.
Not Glenn Miller as his was an orchestra.

I think Buddy Holly & The Crickets are good contenders because Bill Haley was still leaning towards the big band sound and, more importantly, Buddy was the first to use a fender guitar when playing with his group.

what about danny and the juniors 1958....buddy holly and the crickets,in effect never existed..they were known as the crickets.then buddy holly went solo..

The Crickets first hit was in September 1957 although The Crickets were formed in 1956. A good case for Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers as they had a No.1 hit in July 1956.
