Musical instrument valuation ??

I want to get a musical instrument (saxophone) valued. My ex-boyfriend bought it for me on my 'big' birthday few years back, when i had intentions to take up lessons how to play it. However i never did and am now thinking of selling it, as it just sits in it's box and never used. It still brand new and shame to just be sitting there. I know its not a cheap one but want to make sure i don't under-value it when selling on. Is there somewhere (Essex area) that I could have it valued and coudl anyone recommend where possibly I could sell it? Thank you

Have you tried phoning music shops in Essex to see if they can value and possibly buy it from you? I know of a Music Shop near to me that sells second hand musical instruments, but get several valuations so you don't get ripped off.

Have a look at the Music Industries Association website, and see if you can find a music shop locally that has membership: http://www.mia.org.uk/retailers/

The MIA is a trade organisation, but its members are some of the most reputable. If a local member shop can't help you, then it should be able to point you in the direction of someone who can. My local shop (also a member shop) often sells stuff on commission for people, and their terms are pretty good.

As a matter of interest, what type/make is it?

Thank you both for your answers... it is a Yanagisawa saxophone (beautifully crafted) and know it was not cheap. It was given to me as gift for a "special" birthday. I will hopefully sell it and invest the money into something I will make full use of.
Such a shame to have it just sitting in it's case.

If its a real Yani it's worth anywhere between £1,500 and £3,000. Your boyfriend must have really loved you!

Of those on ChuckFickens' list, Bill Lewington is very reputable and well-known in the sax community.

And as glesga says, Yanagisawa is one of the best saxophones you can buy. Their cheapest new alto retails at around £1500 so if you had one in good condition then I don't think you'd be unreasonable in asking between £800-£1000 for it.
