What does Charlene mean when she sings "I've been exploring the subtle whoring that costs too much to be free"? I gather this song's about someone who has lived a life chasing ephermeral, transient things.....freedom at all costs. I don't understand the line within this context.

maybe it is quite simply what it is ........ freedom that she wanted but then realisation that freedom is not actually free and what she wants and it has made her feel bad.  Freedom comes with a price tag?
