bass drum skin hole...

can you make your own hole? or will it destroy the skin?

and if you can is there anywhere you shouldnt put it, and does it have to be round, does it matter?

You can buy special cutters to make your own hole with, and it shouldn't destroy it. Shape won't make much difference either.

However I've spoken to a number of drummers who question why anyone would want to do this to a modern drum. Today's sound technology is so sophisticated - even the basic stuff - that it's sufficient to mic against either of the heads if you want amplification.

Google 'Mike Dolbear drums', and get yourself onto the forum attached to his website. Lots and lots of very friendly, experienced and knowledgable drummers there who will be able to give you excellent advice.
