The crimes these days get more and more gruesome and savage.

When I first head on the radio the report of this killing, I did not realise how horrific it really was, I just said to my wife, "at a time when most little children are dreaming about what Santa is bringing them, here is a little girl who is being stabbed to death by her own mother, that little girl will not see this Christmas or any other".

Before anyone leaps in to say that she hasn't yet been found guilty of killing her young daughter, I say yes I agree, but believe the evidence is damning.

i gather that the lady has mental health problems...so very sad but not crime as such
That is no more gruesome and savage than other crimes committed by some people with serious mental health problems...
Sorry but woofgang is right- there have always been horrific murders commited by those who are seriously mentally ill- just now we realise that it is the disease and not a right minded individual being evil and treat the person accordingly not adding yet more violence and misery to an already horrible situation as it is. Poor little girl, poor mother who did it.
Then she'll get the help she so desperately needed...and what she has done will torture her...
AOG.....yes, I am afraid it can.

I notice that these "mental problems" are diagnosed "after the event".........odd?
Of course it's not odd Sqad...she obviously hadn't done anything to alert anyone.
Why odd ?

Rather than being an 'excuse for' which is what I infer from your comment, sqad, I would suggest that she is another example of a failure in the Mental health services to identify a person who is a risk to herself and others.
People cry out for help with mental health problems. They're not listened to and then something like this happens.
I'm not saying this mother did look for help, but there have been cases reported recently where mentally ill people committed serious crimes after being turned away by the people who should have treated them.
ummmm I wasnt being specific........my comment applied to many cases that have the diagnosis of "mental problems" diagnosed after crimes.

Do you think that in some cases it might be a diagnosis of convenience?
it's the age old argument.. do social services take the children away at the first sign of a minor "blip"?

someone would have stepped in had this been the vaguest of possibilities.
Surely people in the medical profession wouldn't sully their reputation by making a diagnosis of convenience?
sandy....;-)
There have been far more gruesome crimes throughout history aog. What happened to the little girl is a tragedy but is not necessarily anything to do with 'these days'.
The poor woman, if she is found guilty, and to be suffering with mental health problems will probably be locked away indefinitley for killing a child. I can think of a well publicised case lately where the killer got away almost scott free
I have checked my dictionary and see that sqad's response to sandyRoe translates as "Dream On".
I have suffered from mental health problems most of my adult life and have found that most 'mentally ill' people are just normal people - some are okay and some are scary. But I there is usually a strange logic to what they do - crazy logic perhaps, but they are not doing some cruel thing to another being on a whim.

There are some truly evil people in this world who have no respect for human (or non-human) life. They do evil things because they can and they want to. These people should not be allowed to breed and should be locked up until the end of time.
Truly sad and horrific....but certainly not confined to 'these days'.......

http://www.infanticide.org/history.htm ......sometimes the result of stress and madness,at other times quite deliberate, and due to attitudes of the society within which it occurs.
I am inclined to think a crime of such horror is due to mental instability,as a 'normal' person would not do something quite so horrific.
I know someone who begged and begged his GP for help. He didn't get it....killed a man...chopped off his penis, stuck it in the deads mans mouth and threw his body in the pond.

(actually...I know his brothers)
Its the law in this country that a mentally ill person cannot be sectioned unless they are a harm to themselves or anyone else. Also our jails are full of schizos needing medical treatment but are classed as ordinary criminals,

From what stems from the above is the lack of awareness as to the mentally ill. I find it hard to believe that the mother had not previosly sought help from her GP and was on some form of medication that she refused to take.

The answer lies in correct diagnosis and controlled supervised use of drugs and administered similar to being an in-patient at a hospital but in most cases the out-patients department..
When and where was that, ummmmm...................?
