When Chris Evans found out there had been a previous recording of the song, he somehow got the wrong end of the stick and - wrongly - accused Imbruglia of plagiarism. In fact, Imbruglia's version had been credited to the correct writers all along, as Evans would have known if he's taken five seconds to just read the single sleeve. One of the writers was Phil Thornalley, who produced both the Scandinavian original and Imbruglia's cover.
Further to jenstar's answer, I believe the hoo-hah was made worse when someone in an interview complimented Natalie on the song's lyrics.
She thanked the interviewer, which was wrongly taken to be a claim that she'd written them. I don't know if this was the Chris Evans incident or some other idiot, but it was blown out of all proportion and was certainly not an attempted "blatant lie". I don't know if the song had anything to do with the Eurovision Vote-Rigging Contest, though.
