Great Men Tainted By Scurrilous Accusations...

Leon Brittan subjected to vile accusations and a prince of the blood royal said to have had an unhealthy interest in 'underage' girls. What has happened to the respect and deference we used to show the pillars of society?

In a lot of cases, they have simply ceased to deserve it.
In years gone by, 'pillars of the community' were seen by their position and status as simply beyond bad behaviour, and the notion of reproach by their underlings.
Now, history shows that these people are not only as fallible as the rest of us, but that they take unfair advantage of their status to exploit and abuse people in their orbit.
Leon Brittain may yet be proven to have been an abuser, history will tell.
As for Prince Andrew (prince of the blood royal no less) - he may well be innocent of the charge against him, but his continuous and continued profligate attitude combined with his acknowledged boorish behaviour means that he does not enjoy the automatic rights perceived of his status and birth right.
Respect used to be automatic, conferred on the 'great and the good', but in modern times, it has to be earned, as indeed it should.

Further - although you post the word 'underage' in inverted commas, in America, in the majority of states, the age of consent is indeed 18, which makes this young woman under age legally if as suggested, Prince Andrew has enjoyed intimate relations with her.
America is seriously hot on the subject of the age of consent - far more than the UK, or other European countries, hence the furore involved.

>>>Social media has happened.
It is not just social media, it is that the "upper classes" who used to run almost everything in this country are now not in control so much.
For example when Edwards VIII (who abdicated in 1936) was going around with a married woman in Wallis Simpson all the newspapers were asked NOT to report on any of it.
The newspapers were all owned by the "upper classes" like Lord Beaverbrook and so on so they all agreed.
So the general public were totally unaware of what was going on.
In fact the behaviour of many of our royals and top politicians has been scandalous for centuries, but they have been allowed to get away with it, when ordinary members of the public have ben sent to prison or disgraced for the same behaviour.
Look how many of our kings in the past have had illegitimate children, who were then made "Duke" this or "Prince" that when illegitimate children in ordinary families were often frowned upon (being a b*stard is still an insult).
Look at how Prince Charles (and Lady Diana) behaved during their marriage, both having affairs outside the marriage.
JF Kennedy, president of America, was a well known womaniser, and none of this was ever reported during his lifetime. A few of our Prime Minsters were also no angles either (Gladstone, John Major are two examples !).
Even when the Duke of Edinburgh was young (and married to our queen) it was alleged he was seeing another woman, and she was eventually sent to somewhere like Australia to get her away from him.
The list of people from the "upper classes" who have had indiscretions is endless, yet many of them have stood up and moralised to us (the public) while at the same time doing all sorts of things behind our backs.
Well nowadays they cant get away with it so easily. And why should they.

Paedophilia is no respecter of rank sandy......it is rampant in every walk of life, as can be seen from the cases that are appearing in the Courts, almost every day of the week. Scout Leaders, School Teachers, pop stars, DJs, Vicars, even Bishops, and every other occupation you can think of, are indulging their filthy habits with gay abandon.
Why should politicians and Royalty be any different ?
