Awhile ago there was talk about cheques being phased out and I understood the idea was later scrapped. Today I was told there has been a change of heart and cheques will now be scrapped on 31st of October this year. Did anyone else know about this and will you be sorry to see them no longer in use?

Need my cheque to pay the milkman
Phoning the dairy to pay can take forever
We still use a lot of cheques in the business I do bookkeeping for, and in the local charity for which I am treasurer.
I'm glad shops don't accept them anymore as it was a lot of faff if you're stuck waiting to pay behind a cheque-writer.
I don't know if it's true about their total demise, though. There are a lot of people who still like them.
Not heard that. Who told you? I don't think cheques can be phased out yet/
That timeline was suggested years ago but I'm sure it has been dropped as a plan.
I don't know when I last seen a cheque or a cheque book, my bank always sent me my cheque book along with my lodgement book but in recent years I have to lodge at atm and pay bills online with paypal or directly from my bank a/c into utility a/c or whatever, restaurants or similar places will not accept a cheque, even if I had one, it's all online now - sometimes I think its safer
I think if this were true, we'd have heard a lot more about it. There would have to be a proper period of notice if it is going to happen.

One of my friends googled it today and drew it to my attention
. It definitely said the deadline was 31st of October 2018.I for one use cheques all the time especially for my £1 postal quizzes, subscriptions , etc. I will be very sorry to see them go.
Not heard that. But banks do seem to be trying to reduce service to zero, so, who knows ?
Plenty of conflicting stories out there, so even though your friend googled it, it depends on which article they read and when it was published.

This one from 2009 from "Money Saving Expert" states that cheques were being abolished from 31st Oct 2018:
https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/banking/2009/12/cheques-to-disappear-by-october-2018

Yet this one from 2011 from the "gov.uk" website, states that the plan to abolish cheques has been abandoned:
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/frequently-asked-questions-on-the-closure-of-the-cheque-system
i will believe it when my bank writes to me and tells me.
this must be how long it is since I received a cheque (in R of I )

I write but one cheque a year, which I send through the post. Otherwise I would have to send an envelope full of cash.
I use cheques quite often.
Nat west charge me 70p for each customers cheque paid in, not a revenue a bank wants to lose.
Prefer to send Birthday cheques rather than send cash (postal service is rubbish) Not always a good idea to ask for bank details
They shelved the plan to abolish them simply because they couldn't find an alternative for even the rare occasion when folk need to use one.

I use lots.
Cheques Being Phased Out

I hope not, I still use them.
I live in a very rural area where there are no trains, few buses, all banks are closed & I pay some bills by cheque. Life is difficult enough now without anymore restrictions. The problem is of course that our betters who make the rules do not live in the real world.
They aren't being scrapped Ron, certainly not soon - fear not.
