If you choose to live in a picturess village next to a river, and lets face it a lot of these properties can be expensive, why should the rest of the country have to pay for work to be done to protect you're property from flooding. Everyone knows what the risk can be living near a river. If you want to live there you pay for it, not me.

What bought this on? just listening to local radio, and we have the same people complaining that the council/ government are not doing enough, and they can't get insurance cover. Well tuf move if you can't afford to keep revamping.

13.15 alavahalf, you not heard of council tax, that everyone pays, to maintain all local areas of pavements and roads. Your argument is void. We are on about extra funds for someone to live by the river, because that's were they choose to live, or run a business.
yep, unusually I agree with TC.
also insurance companies are forced to cover properties that flood by law and we all pay for that via higher premiums for all.

TTT, Can't believe it, I've just flooded my pants.
...you'll have to build your own defences in those TC!
fortunately for me and through no act of awareness my house is on the top of a hill!
You should claim for having to slog up the hill. Corby'll support you.

it's a matter of scale - and because of the reason for the barrier.

it wasn't built to protect individual riverside properties from floods caused by the river, but to protect the entire london flood plain area from exceptionally high tides or storm surges that would use the thames as their gateway.
13.18..that happened in Birmingham a few years ago. A really nice pub by a canal had live music 5 nights a week. Sadly owners of newly built flats over the road complained so much it had to close down in the end.
