Fag packet idea, extending school hours, hissing about with school holidays, no thought for parents working hours, not to mention teachers working longer hours for the same pay, and the darker winter months. Zac @13.17 Yep that was the word I was hunting for. Let the teachers sort it out, because the likes of GW has not got a clue how it works on the ground and in the real classroom situation, by that I mean your bog standard school were the real problems will be.

The five term school yesr, with shorter summer break and a bit longer on the half terms has been talked about for as long as I can remember. I remember voting on it donkeys years ago. The majority of children that do wel, at s hool and put the work in will do well, the children who don't won't, was ever thus. There is a niche in life for everybody and chances of further education for those who want it.

Also people forget that for kids school is hard work. Esp the little ones.... every day is learning new things. Their brains will need a break.

Was a teacher for my own two kids for years, so rethink that. What they fell down on during the day lessons, then they were given homework on that downfall while it was still fresh in their heads.

Teacake, teaching your own two children at home is hardly the same as teaching a class of 25-30. An old adage comes to mind, ' for every person wishing to teach, there are 25 not wishing to be taught'. In a school, children are taught up until the time they go home, in some primary schools the teacher then spends the next half hour helping each child to put their coat and shoes on, let alone starting to prepare homework. Let us look at this homework, you're asking teachers to now prepare individual homework for at least 25 children over a number of subjects. that's setting an individual piece of homework at least a 100 times per day. Seeing as this is based on that days school work, when do the children actually receive it, do they stay in school until it's ready or does the teacher deliver that evening in time for the children to do it; not all households have a computer and even if they did the teacher cannot send out a group e mail as each piece of homework is different, so that's 100 e mails per night. And now of course, having got home the teacher has to mark the previous days homework and prepare the lessons for the following day. In your OP you mention teachers working longer hours for the same pay, what you're suggesting is increasing their hours even longer.

For each topic covered, there will be a scheme of work. This is then made into lesson plans which include learning outcomes and differentiated activities and the homework to be set to reinforce learning. Where age appropriate, end of topic test are set to check for gaps in learning and then these are addressed.

Teachers don’t just make things up on the hoof, there is meticulous planning and assessment activities so that the whole curriculum is covered and (hopefully) understood.
