You really need to bone up on some facts about the Marshall plan, many European countries received aid including Britain in the form of a loan, it wasn't a gift, it all had to be repaid by buying American goods and services.

10 Clarion; Just checked with the Oracle (my historian wife) and learnt that Britain received 3 times as much aid as Germany, twice that of France. Every country received Marshall plan aid - The Netherlands, Italy, even Turkey, the smart and wealth creating move by America was that it could only be spent on buying goods and services from the USA, and it had to be paid back with interest. (I seem to think it was Gordon Brown who paid back the last instalment!)
