Wouldn't have thought quibbling about such a short period was worth it.

It's analogous to use by dates on food. It doesn't go off overnight. You check it and use it if still OK.

Has he been officially declared mentally unfit? Besides, he has advisors around him 24/7 so any policy decisions he makes between now and the end of his tenure will not be his alone.

The other guy isn't playing with a full deck either, if his recent ramblings are anything to go by. Perhaps they could both be retired to some plush care home and let a couple of younger contenders battle it out.

he has not been declared mentally unfit... he simply said that he will explain his decision in more detail. he is at this point just a caretaker so unless he is actually going mad it makes sense to finish his term

He has a huge support team who, I hope, would tell him which buttons to push.

I don't know if he's been declared mentally unfit, untitled, but the whole world can see why he's withdrawn from the race.  Incidentally, succumbing to age-related dementia doesn't equate 'going mad'.  That's an attitude borne of ignorance.

no

Aunt Polly, //I don't know if he's been declared mentally unfit//

If he did stand down then Harris would take over - would that be better?

The whole US president issue is a complete fiasco, they are making their country a laughing stock.

He's not mentally unfit but he's showing signs he's heading that way. The decent thing to do is let him stay on till January and complete the term. He's standing down, no need to hound him out the door. I'm sure the team around him will handle it.

"Incidentally, succumbing to age-related dementia doesn't equate 'going mad'."

i didn't say that it was and do not think that it is. biden has not as far as anyone knows been diagnosed with dementia. sorry you misunderstood.

i mentioned madness because i think that would be a situation in which getting him out immediately would be necessary... and one that does not seem to apply here

The question includes an "IF".

Yes, the sooner the better.

"Perhaps they could both be retired to some plush care home and let a couple of younger contenders battle it out."

Younger contenders tend no to have sufficient money, Ken. Running for POTUSA is a costly business these days.

He is not fit to continue- he should go now.  How on earth is he expected to continue fulfilling the most powerful role in the world when he can't string a sentence together?  Give Harris the job and let's see her in action.

It's not the case that he's unfit for office now (that's not to say he is fit, I'm not a doctor) but that there are major doubts that he would last the next five years. Seems like the usual spiteful Republican verbal diarrhoea.

If that's the case, Mozz, why step down at all?  He gave no reason for stepping down- so it's perfectly legitimate for people to want him to leave office immediately.  If he can't serve next year, how can he serve for another six months?  Kamala wants the job, he wants her to have it- let her have it!

//Seems like the usual spiteful Republican verbal diarrhoea.//

Reminicent of the Dems spteful diarrheoa at TRump for four years constant, or have you convienently forgetten that bit?

As for Mr Biden, leave him in place, he hasnt been running the country for a while so a few more months wont matter and then at least he can retire having done the full term.
