Dog Owners - How Safe Is Your Postman?
We've had a notice posted today saying that 2000 postmen are bitten annually by dogs. That's a lot of bites. Do you make an effort to keep your postman safe from your dog?

My brother in Law once came round in his Pat uniform and she started on him, didnt normally.
The dog just used to growl, but a 45Kg boxer deep growling is not pleasant so we tried to keep them in the house or away from the back gates if outside.
We lived in a terraced house with no significant front garden and a very short path from the front gate to the door. Our dog was very protective but not a biter. She was not left out front because we had a long back garden. The most damage she could have done was to nip a finger if it poked through the letterbox and she wasn't daft enough to bother with nipping a finger because she knew it was unnecessary.
I think the worst situation for a postperson is when there is a difficult letterbox and one of those disgusting little tykes who think it's 'hard' to atack any intrusive digit, or a dog which is allowed to roam around the front garden and bark or growl so that the poor postie is scared to even attempt an approach to the letterbox. Yes, we all know that our darling is good as gold and wouldn't do any harm; but does the dog know that?
Best to keep dogs away from posties.
Very much so! He is lovely with people (especially children), but frightened of other dogs. He's a rescue and has been attacked by other dogs.
He, like many, feels the need to defend the house against those horrible people who come and push things into his domaine. He would certainly nip (too small to do much damage). We are very careful.
I remember being a postman years ago. My first day delivering in one particular street, just as I was about a letter I heard this loud growl, there at the top of a gate was a dog which resembled a bear. This gate was positioned just a few feet from the house I posting a letter, I shate myself. Luckily after reporting this I didn't need to post any more letters at that address. I was initially angry at their usual postie, til I found out this dog only moved into that house when he was on leave.
Our dogs don't get near the postman at home, not that it would matter, they both love meeting people, if we're walking up the road and see him, they make a fuss of him, because under the seat in the van he has a stash of dog biscuits. On a previous round he'd a long drive up to the house, waiting at the bottom was a growling dog, he'd to press the buzzer and the owner came down for the post, he started giving the dog a treat and ended up the dog was always waiting for him wagging its tail.
