In the UK? Well, there has to be one by May 2010. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if the new Labour leader called a snap election later this year.
Why on earth would he do that? I don't believe that Gordon Brown really wants to go down in history as the shortest-serving PM.
I can't imagine why he'd do that either. Why do you say that jenstar?
If wanted to be an effective PM,it would be a good idea for him to the country within a year of taking over,to get a mandate from the British people. Of course,it depends on how David Cameron's Tories are in the opinion polls - if they are surging ahead,I doubt it would be wise to go to the country.
Personally,I would like a General Election called right now,and get the British people to boot out this phoney PM - Tony Bliar.

Me - I just fancy a change; Tony Bliar's been PM over half my life and it would be nice to see a different face on the news every day!!!!!!!
If we are taking bets, I'm going for October 2008.

They would want 4 years but 2009 is European election years which Brown would prefer to avoid.

Installed as Leader this summer, celebrates 1 year anniversary of his promotion at Conference in 2008 by calling a snap election, catching the (still policy-less) Tories on the hoof and effectively cancelling the Conservative conference the following week.
NO you are all wrong the next general election was actually yesterday and you all missed it!!
