Why does America seem to be taking a back seat approach towards Libya in front of the cameras yet they are in total overall charge of things behind them?

Why do you think? Because when it all goes belly-up they can creep away unscathed while the rest of the world takes the blame. Nothing different there then.
probably can see another Vietnam on the horizon
Obama covering his back
They don't want to offend their friends, the tyrants, in other parts of the Arab world?
Well i totally agree with many of you been a young person it seems all they want to do is to interfere with others issuse.... Maybe im wrong. Anyways my view and opinion is just the fact that it all seems to be over crude it wasnt affecting the uk or the usa although prices was going up, but leave them fight it amongst themselves. Britan made redundencies in the forces so where is cameron getting the resourses to send troops in to sort Libya's sh*te out?

Seems I shouldn`t have asked about the portrayed lack of American involvement in Libya or questioned the illegality of the Bahrainian and Yemeni massacre in another link, or warned about a protracted creep war.
SILLY me for thinking this was a country of free speech and that we are currently fighting for democracy in other countries around the world.
I`m off to leave you all at it or i`ll land up like some of the bullying posters on here who revel in be-littling others for their own gratifying means.
all your questions are loaded, try being sincere.
Obama is playing his cards as he sees future conflicts in the world. He no longer wants to drag the US ito any conflict especially Europe. His actions suggest like a mother bird throws its young from the nest to fend for themselves so it will be for Libya. The question is who will take over the mantle of commander in chief. I suppose he has already spoken to Cameron to accept the post.

Gawd help us if he does take up the post....10 years of egotist Blair have been enough to stomach.
It was Dubya who said he wanted to see 'Democracy' sweep across the Arab States (though he probably wasn't thinking of Bahrain, Saudi and Qatar). The problem for America, is that most of the real despots in the region, they have supported for 30 years.

So they are torn between two coflicting opportunities. They can see Gaddafi is weak and they would be happy to see the back of him. But that would encourage uprisings against their chums in Saudi. So the US just turn up for the barrel shoot, but they probably don't want Gaddafi to be removed, just serverely weakened.

If he stepped down or someone else took over, the US could start doing business with the Libyians without seemingly getting its hands dirty by sucking up to Gaddafi (like Blair eventually did). The Americans would quite happily deal with Libya its present unpredictable, barmy, brutal leader was changed.
