We're not bigoted, that's why - the UK has had immigrants arriving here since before records began - most of us have genes going back to somewhere like the Black Sea or mid-Africa, if you believe the genetics people. There are as many people here "resident" who play the system, look at all those thousands who've never worked and claim and claim and have sky and holidays, things we working people can't afford - it's not all down to asylum seekers. And before you say I don't know what I am talking about it, I live in Dover, the place was heaving with asylum applicants a few years back when people were coming out of Kosovo and Serbia to escape almost certain death there.
Yes some people now how to play the system - I am just glad that we have free speech here to have conversations like this, and that we are all entitled to our own opinions. God forbid that any of us have to run from a military state where you are in fear of your life, because of your beliefs or the way you look.
The Daily Mail has a lot to answer for - I don't dispute the facts but I do find the rabble-rousing brings out the worst in some people.

thank you for injecting some common sense logic into this thread, boxie. I must say I also get rather sick of the racist, bigoted, unintelligent remarks that fly around AB and which are prevalent here.

And you are right about groups of "residents" that know how to fleece the system and effectively "cheat" more deserving cases, such as perhaps Postdog, from the benefits that they are due. I just hope that the current government continues to weed them out rather than blithely accept such cheating as the last motley bunch, supposedly called a Government, did.

I came back to this country in somewhat of a perilous state and could not get the benefits due perhaps to me as a citizen of the UK and, yes, it was annoying to see scroungers ripping the system off and certain immigrant groups blatantly profiteering, or through the back-door such as by arranged marriages. However, we must always recognise that we are and have always been a nation of immigrants and a refuge for those genuinely scorned oir victimised by their own nations. And long may that continue; it is one of our resposnibilities of being at least a half-civilised leading nation.

I understand what you are saying, fender, but genuine asylum seekers are admitted - what goes wrong is that people claim asylum at the port/place of entry, then have to be assessed to see if their claim is legit. We have the immigration removal centre here full of people awaiting repatriation. How do you propose to stop them getting in - most are found here at the docks now but they hide in all sorts of places in planes and boats. The 58 Chinese who died here a few years back were hidden in a tomato lorry. The Government is cutting back on Border Control personnel, not increasing it. It's not going to go away.

I don't see it as bigotry , wanting to curb an influx of people who we can't afford to house, there are always going to be genuine Asylum seekers who need our help but what of the vast number who try to get here on a daily basis from France, hear them interviewed and they will mostly say the reason they want to be here "I will get a house and a job and money" they are questioned over their legality and told to report each day to a Police Station...never to be seen again

I can't argue with "dump the Human Rights Act" - I wish they would.

There are dozens waiting the other side of the Channel - we know people who drive commercial vehicles across Europe and they are never allowed to wait up in the Calais area in case they get jumped, they have to park well away then only come into town in order to get on the ferry or the train at Sangatte. I don't understand why the French can't assess their asylum status and have done with it, but they don't want to.

There are immigrants who are hard working people with strong family and moral values, such as Chinese and Polish, who contribute to this country.

There are immigrants who have no wish to integrate, or learn our language, but are adept at working our benefits system. Their children may one day contribute to our economy.

The thing is bobbi, there are more people LEAVING the UK than trying to come into it, so any arguments that we're sinking under a tide of immigraiton etc is totally unfounded. If given the chance the immigrant community always spearheads self employment, what the Govt needs to be doing is making it easier to start your own business and helping people off benefits both imigrant and non immigrant, and tbh the way people refer to immigrants as though they are sub human IS bigoted. I came here from Ireland with less than £50 in my pocket and I did sign on as unemployed when I first got here, and with no help whatsoever in setting up a business had to do somthing which was free to start, so I cleaned cars, valetted them etc and slowly moved on to selling cars, working with the internet and finally buying and selling property etc until I now employ more than 30 people across all of my business'. I am exactly what you are all talking about, and 20 years ago would have fitted your stereotype of being a worthless immigrant on the dole, but I pay my taxes and so presumeably help a lot of your indiginous lazy sots who live on benefits, but do I moan about it, do I hell, so why the hatred about a single group rather than the TYPE of person?
